Course Description:
The course examines the key features of High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) defined in UMTS Release 5. Beginning with a review of the currently implemented Release 99 WCDMA network architecture, the course highlights current limitations and how these are overcome by the enhanced features offered by HSDPA. Particular emphasis is placed on the new Release 5 channels and how fast scheduling and incremental redundancy with Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ) are employed, along with UE Channel Quality Indicator (CQI) reporting, to provide high speed downlink data services. Enhancements to Layer 3, Layer 2, and the Physical layer are examined in detail.
