 UMTS/WCDMA Technical Overview

Prerequisites:
Technical background in wireless telecommunications.  Although not required, a background in GSM technology is a plus.
Audience:
This course is for the experienced telecommunications professional with a need to learn the principals of 3GPP Release 99 of WCDMA with as well as elements of Release 5,  High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and Release 6, High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA).
Course Description: 
This course provides an overview of the WCDMA system, as defined in the 3GPP Release 99 specifications for the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS).  Basic concepts of HSDPA and HSUPA are also provided.  The course begins with an overview of features for UMTS Release 99, HSDPA, and HSUPA.  An overview of features for future 3GPP releases High Speed Packet Access plus (HSPA+) and Long Term Evolution (LTE) is also provided.  The course continues by examining WCDMA and UMTS Networks, Protocol Layers and Channel Descriptions, CDMA Concepts, and Key Physical Layer Concepts for WCDMA.  The course concludes by examining UTRAN RF Design and Planning concepts.
Objectives:

·          Describe why UMTS reuses the GSM/GPRS Core Network.

·          List the major components in a UMTS Network and their function

·          List the major releases of the UMTS standard and what they support.

·          Explain how the UMTS Signaling Protocol stack is constructed.

·          Describe how handovers work.

·          Explain when cell reselection is performed versus doing handovers.

·          Describe the concept of Radio Access Bearers.
