UMTS/WCDMA Technical Overview course, background in UMTS Release 99, or equivalent work experience.

Telecommunications engineering/technical professionals seeking a detailed understanding of MBMS.
Course Description: 
This course provides a low level technical overview of MBMS (Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Service). After understanding the motivations and the main concepts pf MBMS, the class takes a closer look at the MBMS network architecture, main phases/procedures, protocols and radio channels. Following this, some performance figures are provided. Finally, some other aspects are covered, such as charging, GERAN and TDD impacts, together with an overview of future standard enhancements for MBMS.

Objectives:
Upon completing this course the student will be able to:
  • Describe the main motivations for MBMS.
  • Explain main concepts in terms of network architecture, protocols, channels, phases and procedures, QoS and mobility aspects.
  • Describe the MBMS network architecture, entities and functionalities.
  • Explain the purpose of the MBMS phases and procedures for both Broadcast and Multicast modes.
  • Differentiate and describe the MBMS protocols and radio channels.
  • Describe MBMS performance and capacity aspects
  • List the main aspects of MBMS charging, MBMS over GERAN and MBMS over UTRAN TDD.
  • Describe Release 7&8 MBMS improvements and enhancements.
