 LTE Network Planning
Length:
8 hours (1 day)

Prerequisites:

    • UMTS/WCDMA Network Planning (2 Days)
    • LTE Technical Overview (1 Day)

Audience:

·         The course is intended for experienced telecommunications RF Network Engineers and Network Planners with the desire to learn and implement the key considerations on an LTE design

·         RF network engineers involved in UMTS/WCDMA/LTE Network Planning. System engineers/project managers involved in a UMTS/WCDMA/LTE deployment who need to understand the planning aspects of evolution technologies

Course Description:

As operators are getting ready to deploy LTE, a good understanding of the considerations for its successful rollout is essential. This one day course presents, in a theoretical and practical way, the parameters necessary to plan an LTE network, from a RF coverage point of view.

The course begins with a quick reminder of LTE system architecture and air interface characteristics. It is then followed by a discussion of interference as applied to LTE, RF propagation models and antenna considerations. The course provides hands-on practice on Link budget calculations and associated formulations to analyze sensitivity impact across variables and to resolve specific case studies. It then provides an overview of parametrization to generate coverage predictions, using a commercial network planning prediction tool. The tool is then used to predict the effect of spectrum when overlaying LTE on 1x (at 850 MHZ) and UMTS (at 2100 MHz).

Objectives:

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the main LTE concepts related to air interface
  • Explain the key network planning differences between LTE and other technology implementations
  • Estimate the impact of different technologies within a given frequency band (coexistence scenarios)
  • Identify the main set of parameters to be considered when planning an LTE network
  • Recognize the causes of interference in an LTE System
  • Estimate the interference in LTE
  • Configure required parameters in the LTE link budget
  • Estimate from a typical link budget the maximum allowable Path loss, Cell radius and Cell count to achieve a given data rate at cell edge across typical morphologies
  • Describe the RF propagation models used for dimensioning in the frequency range between 2.6GHz and 700MHz
  • Configure a commercial  network planning prediction tool to predict LTE coverage
  • Estimate the spectrum impact to predict its effect when overlaying LTE over other technologies

Media:
